A primeira impressão do visual relativamente restrito do Nexus 5X esconde a tecnologia de ponta abaixo de seu capô. Além de um moderno SoC Snapdragon, todos os padrões sem fio mais modernos, como AC Wi-Fi com até 866 Mbit/s, Bluetooth 4.2 e NFC, estão abordo. Uma variedade de padrões de redes móveis também é suportada. O leitor de cartões integrado que funciona muito bem, e quase sem atrasos, e o módulo GPS muito preciso são outros presentes técnicos. A tela também ganha muitos pontos positivos com o seu bom brilho, muito boas taxas de contraste, e reprodução de cores precisa.

A câmera principal do smartphone tira fotos muito nítidas em ambientes claros e encontra rapidamente o ponto focal correto, graças ao apoio do laser. Os dois LED brilhantes não podem evitar que a qualidade da imagem diminua com uma iluminação deficiente. No entanto, o ruído da imagem aumenta bastante sem ele ou quando objeto está longe. Então os detalhes também se perdem. A opção de gravar vídeos UHD também é ótima, mas a apertada capacidade de armazenamento pode se tronar um problema rapidamente. Os usuários do Nexus 5X não terão mais de 32 GB; a configuração básica inclusive oferece apenas uma memória flash de 16 GB.

O Nexus 5X ganha pontos em muitos aspectos no uso rotineiro. Ele segue dignamente os passos de seu antecessor indireto Nexus 5 com uma boa duração da bateria, sistema operacional sempre respondendo sem problemas, e uma carcaça que brilha com a estabilidade e construção de alta qualidade.

Os compradores do Nexus não devem se preocupar muito com as atualizações do Android, dado que eles o receberão antes de muitos outros, diretamente da Google. Além do armazenamento não expansível, o preço de 529 Euros (~$581) provavelmente será o maior obstáculo para o sucesso do smartphone. Muitos produtos da concorrência, atualmente são vendidos com um preço razoavelmente menor ou oferecem mais pelo dinheiro. Por exemplo, o LG G4 agora está disponível por um preço inicial de cerca dos 450 Euros (~$494) e também atrai com um armazenamento expansível e tela maior de 5,5-polegadas.
