Battery life is specced at 4.5 (17") and 5.25 hours (14"/15") with the 6-cell battery, or 7.5 hours to as much as 9 hours with the 9-cell battery. The Dell Studio XPS 16 is a good-looking entertainment notebook of reasonable build quality and decent portability (considering its size). It packs a stunningly vibrant screen, along with some gaming punch. While it has some minor flaws, particularly the amount of heat it pumps out during gaming, it is a great buy for those who can afford its $2000+ pricetag. As a footnote, during the composition of this review, the speakers started blowing out intermittently (I believe due to a loose wire). Therefore, I contacted Dell support via chat, and they tried re-installing the audio driver to no avail. I also reported the issue with the uneven trim marking up the screen and the flickering issue. The tech then told me that it would be easier to replace the whole machine with something comparable or better. Contrary to what many others say about Dell Tech Support, I say that it rocks ... if you are under Completecare.

Yes, you do lose a few vertical pixels, but given we've seen such pleasures as the 1,600 x 900 13.1in effort in the Sony VAIO Z Series (see: Sony VAIO VGN-Z11WN/B) and the magnificent 1,920 x 1,080, RGB LED one in the Dell Studio XPS 16 we're looking today, there are enough points in the 'pros' column to even things out. Clearly this is good news for Dell, then, since this is the first and only 16in notebook to sport such a display - the closest alternative being Sony's 18.4in VAIO AW11XU/Q, which you won't see south of £2,000. We can't recommend the Dell Studio XPS 16 to everyone because HP's HDX 16 offers a similar feature set at a keener price. However, if you've been hankering after a notebook with desktop quality colour fidelity, then it makes a tantalising proposition - especially when, in the greater scheme of things, the option isn't even that expensive. As such it gets a (qualified) Recommended Award.

The only reason I’ve compared this laptop with the other two in the table, is to show that this one offers a good price-performance ratio. Otherwise, the two other machines have their own reasons (and good ones) for being slightly over priced. This machine doesn’t look as stylish and slick, there’s not much metal in construction and it is quite far from being truly portable. So clearly, aesthetics and build quality have a lot to do when it comes to laptops. And if one brand has a larger fan following than another, then it’s a different ball game altogether.

A Dell oferece notebooks adequados para várias aplicações, como notebooks comerciais, notebooks para jogos, ultraportáteis e estações de trabalho. Os laptops empresariais da Dell das séries Latitude e Precision são uma opção para usuários profissionais e empresas.

Em 2023, a Dell tinha uma participação de mercado de aproximadamente 17% nas vendas globais de PCs, ocupando a terceira posição, depois da Lenovo e da HP.

Para os entusiastas de jogos, a marca Alienware da Dell é para notebooks para jogos.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3670: HD 3650 com maior freqüência, tão alta quanto a antiga 2600 XT. Comparada com isto, a HD 3650 deve ser mais fria (processo 55nm) e apresenta suporte a DirectX 10.1. O Avivo HD também é incluído para decodificar vídeos HD com o GPU.

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4670: Uma versão com maior freqüência da Mobilty HD 4650. Suporta a tecnologia Avivo HD e deve ter um desempenho significativamente melhor do que a anterior, 3670. O desempenho das soluções gráficas depende do tipo de memória usado (DDR2, DDR3, GDDR3 possíveis) e ela deve ficar entre a HD 4650 e 4670.

Intel Core 2 Duo: Este é o sucessor do Core Duo e o Core Solo com um pipeline mais longo e com 5-20%  a mais de velocidade sem maior consumo de energia. Adicionalmente ao design do Core Duo existe um quarto decodificador, uma unidade SSE ampliada e uma unidade lógica aritmética (ALU) adicional.

Os Core 2 Duo para notebooks são idênticos aos processadores Core 2 Duo para desktops, mas os processadores para notebooks trabalham com tensões mais baixas e um Frontside bus clock mais baixo. O desempenho de notebooks igualmente clocked é 20-25% mais baixo que PCs Desktop  por causa do Frontside bus clock mais baixo e os discos rígidos mais lentos.

T9400: O T9400 é um veloz CPU de classe média para portáteis e basicamente um Core 2 Duo P9500 com um TDP mais alto de 35 Watt.

P9700: Um CPU dual core muito veloz e graças ao TDP de 28 Watt, também energeticamente eficiente. Comparado com outro modelos-P, o P9700 oferece o completo cache de 6MB de nível 2.

Intel Core i7:

720QM: O Core i7-720QM é o Core i7 mais lento em 2009 e apresenta uma freqüência entre 1,6 e 2,8 GHz (graças ao Modo Turbo) Portanto, combina as vantagens de um CPU quad core lento com um veloz cpu de um só núcleo. Comparado com os CPUs Core i7 móveis, o 720QM somente apresenta 6MB L3 Cache.

Intel Core i5:

520M: O Core i5-520M possui apenas 3 MB L3 Cache (comparado com o I7-640M) e apresenta uma freqüência entre 2,4-2,93 GHz (Modo Turbo). Graças ao Hyperthreading, 4 threads podem ser processados simultaneamente. Uma placa de vídeo integrada (GMA HD 3150) e um controlador de memória DDR3 também estão incluídos no pacote.
