Looking for a portable business machine? It's clear the Acer TM8371 is a business-oriented machine. It packs excellent performance and oodles of battery life into a very thin, very light, but very dull frame. It doesn't win any awards for gaming performance, but we don't suspect that's what it was designed to do. The model we tested comes in, judging from a few retail websites, at around £700 right now. It's possible to get it even cheaper, albeit with a reduced set of specs - down to more like £600. If you're looking for a business laptop around that price then this is an excellent choice.

Earlier in the year, Acer was one of the first companies to take advantage of Intel's new CULV processors in creating affordable ultra-portables. Delivering good performance and outstanding battery life, we were delighted by the Acer Aspire Timeline 4810T and gave it a Recommended Award. If you're a businessman who has always wanted an ultra-portable but couldn't justify the expense, the TravelMate Timeline 8731 should make you very happy. Its outstanding battery life and realistic price are its best points, but it also retains enough important features that you won't feel too hamstrung.

Available in three main configurations, our mid-range review sample boasts the full product name Acer TravelMate Timeline TM8371-944G32 N, and retails for around £700. We like the Acer TravelMate Timeline 8371. It's attractive in an understated sort of way, offers strong performance and boasts good battery life. Laptops such as the MSI X340 might suit a more fashion-conscious crowd, but, all things considered, we'd rather spend our money on the 8371.

With frankly amazing battery life, lasting as long as 10 hours under light use, and some excellent specifications make this great for those on the road. We didn’t like keyboard that much but overall this is an excellent value package.

Comentario

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: GPU integrado (memória compartilhada) no chipset GM45 (Montevina). Graças a dois shaders a mais e uma freqüência de núcleo mais alta, é muito mais rápido que o antigo GMA X3100. Mesmo assim, não é recomendável para jogadores (jogos DirectX 10 não são fluidos e podem ser jogados somente com configurações muito baixas). O processador de vídeo integrado é capaz de ajudar a decodificar vídeos HD (AVC/VC-2/MPEG2), como para uma reprodução fluida de Blu-Ray com CPUs lentos.

Estes processadores gráficos podem mostrar fluidamente só jogos antigos. Jogos atuais só podem ser apresentados com detalhes substancialmente reduzidos.

Intel Core 2 Duo: Este é o sucessor do Core Duo e o Core Solo com um pipeline mais longo e com 5-20%  a mais de velocidade sem maior consumo de energia. Adicionalmente ao design do Core Duo existe um quarto decodificador, uma unidade SSE ampliada e uma unidade lógica aritmética (ALU) adicional.

Os Core 2 Duo para notebooks são idênticos aos processadores Core 2 Duo para desktops, mas os processadores para notebooks trabalham com tensões mais baixas e um Frontside bus clock mais baixo. O desempenho de notebooks igualmente clocked é 20-25% mais baixo que PCs Desktop  por causa do Frontside bus clock mais baixo e os discos rígidos mais lentos.
