We’re not going to tell you that this is the perfect budget Chromebook. It feels cheap, the screen really isn’t up to scratch and you don’t have to spend much more to get a better device. If it had the lightweight design and better screen of the Asus C223 it might nudge closer to budget brilliance. If you can live with the compromises, however – or find it on a spectacular deal – the IdeaPad 3 Chromebook remains a genuinely usable laptop. For example, it could make a cheap, lightweight option for kids doing homework or a little sofa-based surfing. As it is, it’s not the full package, but it’s still worth considering – and especially if the price is right.

If there’s one good reason to get excited about the Lenovo IdeaPad 3 Chromebook, it’s that it’s astonishingly cheap. £180 is a tiny amount to pay for a fully featured laptop, even one with a basic specification and an 11.6in screen. What’s more, Lenovo knows how to put a cost-conscious Chromebook together. The old 11.6in Chromebook 500e was a fantastic little ruggedized convertible and came from a fairly long line of great value Lenovo-branded Chromebooks.

If Lenovo had included even a glossy display over the matte-finished version, then this would be a near-perfect Chromebook. The keyboard is fantastic, the design looks good despite the plastic build, and the IdeaPad 3 just chugs along throughout almost any tasks you can throw at it. But that display. That darned display is what keeps me from making it a de-facto suggestion for anyone wanting a cheap laptop/Chromebook.

When I unboxed this Chromebook, the question was “can a $169 device actually be worth buying?” Well, to make a long story short, YES. Does that mean this Chromebook is for everyone? Absolutely not. Many users want or need better internals or a nicer display. A lot of consumers want a 2-in-1 or perhaps a tablet and that’s okay. What I am saying is, for $169, this Chromebook will serve you well and is worth every penny and then some. While it may not be for everyone, it is definitely a great choice for many. If you need a cheap device, quickly that will actually put in work, this Chromebook is for you. Maybe you just want an inexpensive second device for the kids or simply to have as a backup around the house. The Lenovo Chromebook 3 is worth a look.
