It may be a tad heavy and have underwhelming standard battery life, but the Satellite Pro U500 has plenty of features, performs well for the most part and it's comfortable to use. We'd like it if a more powerful battery was installed by default and we also hope that Toshiba updates the fingerprint software on all its shipping models. We also wish the fingerprint utility would also work with Firefox.

I have a hard time believing that most students would be interesting in buying this Toshiba for the full retail price of more than $1,000 when that same student could buy a brand new 13-inch Apple MacBook Pro for roughly the same price.

While the devices lose gram by gram, the performance, down to netbooks, constantly decreases as well - even though Nvidia steer in the opposite direction with their Ion platform. The U500 by Toshiba takes a further step here. Despite the compact 13.3" format, the laptop offers a powerful Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, and an independent middle-class graphics card by ATI.

This 13.3-inch laptop aims to provide a neat combination of power and portability and, with high-end components onboard, it's a laptop that's easy to use and like. The Satellite U500-10Z impressed us greatly. The keyboard is still a sore point, but the power on offer in such a compact machine is difficult to ignore.

There's plenty to like about Toshiba's Satellite U500-178: it's very fast, portable and offers excellent connectivity, both wired and wireless. It also has one or two outstanding features, such as the backlit keyboard and the ability to charge USB devices even when switched off. In use, however, it's ultimately let down by mediocre battery life and a slightly sub-par keyboard, but if you don't mind buying an extra battery then its performance and varied features still warrant it a place on your shortlist.

Toshiba: A Toshiba Corporation é um conglomerado ou grupo tecnológico japonês. A empresa foi fundada em 1939 e, em 1978, Toshiba tornou-se o nome oficial da empresa. Os produtos e serviços da empresa incluem sistemas de energia, infraestrutura industrial e social, elevadores e escadas rolantes, componentes eletrônicos, semicondutores, discos rígidos, impressoras, baterias, iluminação, logística e tecnologia da informação. A Toshiba foi uma das maiores fabricantes de computadores pessoais, eletrônicos de consumo, eletrodomésticos e equipamentos médicos.
Estes processadores gráficos podem mostrar fluidamente só jogos antigos. Jogos atuais só podem ser apresentados com detalhes substancialmente reduzidos.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500M:
O Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD (algumas vezes também chamados GMA X4500 HD ou outras combinações) é uma placa gráfica compartilhada, com capacidade DirectX 10, presente nos chipsets GM45, GE45 e GS45 da plataforma Centrino 2 (Montevina). O chip não tem memória dedicada e a retira dinamicamente da memória principal (até 384 MB).
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570: GPU baixo-médio nível que possui uma soma de sombreadores baixa e uma memória bus de 64 bits, mas freqüência alta. Similar a Radeon 4550. Suporta Avivo HD e DirectX 10.1.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: GPU integrado (memória compartilhada) no chipset GM45 (Montevina). Graças a dois shaders a mais e uma freqüência de núcleo mais alta, é muito mais rápido que o antigo GMA X3100. Mesmo assim, não é recomendável para jogadores (jogos DirectX 10 não são fluidos e podem ser jogados somente com configurações muito baixas). O processador de vídeo integrado é capaz de ajudar a decodificar vídeos HD (AVC/VC-2/MPEG2), como para uma reprodução fluida de Blu-Ray com CPUs lentos.
NVIDIA GeForce G210M: AT Nvidia GeForce G210M ou G 210 M é uma placa gráfica DirectX 10.1 para portáteis baseada no núcleo GT218 core. Assim como sua predecessora ela apresenta 16 shaders mas a velocidade do clock foi muito aumentada. Devido ao processo de 40nm (comparado com o processo de 55nm da G110M) o consumo máximo de energia permanece o mesmo.
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) HD Graphics: Placa de vídeo integrada que está integrada nos novos CPUs Arrandale (Core i3 / i5 / i7 Dual Cores). Dependendo do modelo e do Turbo Boost, a GMA HD possui uma freqüência entre 166 e 766 MHz.
NVIDIA GeForce 310M: A GeForce 310M é a sucessora da GeFore G210M e se baseia no mesmo chip com freqüências muito semelhantes (velocidade de shader +30MHz até 1530MHz).

Intel Core 2 Duo: Este é o sucessor do Core Duo e o Core Solo com um pipeline mais longo e com 5-20% a mais de velocidade sem maior consumo de energia. Adicionalmente ao design do Core Duo existe um quarto decodificador, uma unidade SSE ampliada e uma unidade lógica aritmética (ALU) adicional.
Os Core 2 Duo para notebooks são idênticos aos processadores Core 2 Duo para desktops, mas os processadores para notebooks trabalham com tensões mais baixas e um Frontside bus clock mais baixo. O desempenho de notebooks igualmente clocked é 20-25% mais baixo que PCs Desktop por causa do Frontside bus clock mais baixo e os discos rígidos mais lentos.
T6500: CPU dual-core de nível básico que se baseia no Penryn com um pequeno cache de 2MB nível 2 e FSB800. Semelhante ao T6570, mas sem VT-x.
P8700: Processador dual core de capacidade média com cache de 3 MB de nível 3 e um TDP de 25 Watt.
P7350: Processador Core 2 Duo de nível básico com Cache de 3 MB Nível 2 e graças ao TDP de 25 Watt também adequado para portáteis de 13 polegadas.
T6600: Processador dual core Core 2 Duo de nível básico com um pequeno cache de 2MB nível 2 e sem funções de virtualização.
P7450: Processador Core 2 Duo de nível básico com Cache de 3 MB Nível 2 e graças ao TDP de 25 Watt também adequado para portáteis de 13 polegadas.
Intel Core i3:
330M: O Core i3-330M é um 350M de menor freqüência e, portanto, também não apresenta o atributo Turbo Boost e apresenta uma freqüência máxima de 2,13 GHz. Graças ao Hyperthreading, 4 threads podem ser processados simultaneamente. Uma placa de vídeo integrada (GMA HD 3150) e um controlador de memória DDR3 também estão incluídos no pacote.
Intel Core i5:
430M: O Core i5-430M é um CPU dual core de classe média que apresenta apenas 3 MB L3 Cache (comparado com o I7-640M) e apresenta uma freqüência entre 2,26-2,53 GHz (Modo Turbo). Além disso, VT-d, trusted Execution e características AES estão faltando no 430M. Graças ao Hyperthreading, 4 threads podem ser processados simultaneamente. Uma placa de vídeo integrada (Intel HD Graphics com 500-733 MHz) e um controlador de memória DDR3 também estão incluídos no pacote.
