Sony's struggles with 4K/120 Hz image blurring on the XH90, XH900H, X9100H and XH92 TVs continue, despite issuing a firmware fix

Sony claims that it has fixed the image blurring at 4K and 120 Hz on the XH90, XH900H, X9100H and XH92, months after it released its high-end TVs. Vincent Teoh of HDTVTest has demonstrated otherwise though, suggesting that a hardware issue is the cause of the blurriness at high refresh rates and 4K.

Sony may advertise many of its TVs as being capable of gaming at 4K and 120 Hz, including the XH900H and XH90. However, image quality has suffered at this combination, as we have covered previously. Last month, Sony promised that it would address image blur that set in after enabling 120 Hz at 4K, although it was unclear how the company planned to do this.

The company delivered though, with a new firmware upgrade rolling out to TVs from the start of this month. As the screenshot below shows, Sony claims that v6.0414 adds support for 4K/120 Hz output and the Apple TV app.

Sony claims that it has fixed 4K and 120 Hz issues with XH90. There are some caveats, though. On the one hand, Sony states that 4K and 120 Hz is only possible when using HDMI 3 and HDMI 4, rather than across all HDMI ports. On the other hand, Vincent Teoh of HDTVTest has demonstrated that v6.0414 does not address the issue completely.

Apparently, v6.0414 sharpens images at 4K and 120 Hz, mitigating the existing blurriness somewhat. However, Sony's high-end TVs still struggle to reproduce single-pixel vertical lines accurately at 120 Hz and 4K. Ultimately, it seems that Sony is unable to fix the blur that affects the likes of the XH90 above 60 Hz at 4K. The PlayStation 5 scales back image quality and asset volumes at 120 Hz, as HDTVTest shows, so 60 Hz may provide the best overall experience anyway.
