The line between netbooks and laptops continues to blur, with screen sizes from 9-inch up to 15-inch in the mix and performance specifications with a similarly wide range. Packard Bell sees its dot s and dot m as mainstream netbooks and the larger of the two, the dot m reviewed here, has an 11.6-inch widescreen LCD and runs on a 1.2GHz, 64-bit Athlon L110 processor with 2GB memory. This is a great little machine, though more a small notebook than an oversized netbook. Vista doesn't hold it back much and the extra memory and strong ATI graphics help with this. However, if you can afford the six-cell battery, go for it, or stay fairly close to a power socket all the time.

Bigger than your regular netbook, the Packard Bell dot m/a offers AMD processors and an 11.6in screen. Breaking away from the pack, the Packard Bell dot m/a has a bigger screen and a potentially faster processor, not to mention a graphics chip that can handle simple games if you drop the quality settings. A generous battery pack is always welcome, although actual runtime is reduced here by the inefficient processors, when compared to an Intel chipset.

In its basic form, the dot m/a is let down badly by its farcically poor battery life but if you can lay hands on one with the six-cell battery for a reasonable price then you will have a very nice machine and one that represents decent value for money. A 10.1in screen Samsung netbook like the NC10 or N110 will set you back between £300 and £350, and neither has the hi-res screen or 2GB of memory of the m/a.

Will Packard Bell's smallest netbook offer big performance? The dot s is Packard Bell's 10.1-inch netbook. Unlike its larger brothers, the dot m and dot m/a, it stays safely in known netbook territory by featuring an Intel Atom processor and running Microsoft's Windows XP operating system. As with the dot m, the sample we reviewed was a pre-production unit so we were not able to provide full benchmarking results, such as battery life testing. While the Packard Bell dot s doesn't really bring anything new to the netbook market, it is a well-rounded machine that should be on most people's list of machines to check out before making a purchase. As long as the touchpad issues are rectified, we are big fans.

Essentially the dot m/a, but from an alternate reality. Packard Bell's second 11.6-inch netbook, the dot m, shares exactly the same chassis as the dot m/a, but differs internally by carrying an Intel Atom processor and running Windows XP software. While the keyboard may not reach the standard we expect, all in all, the Packard Bell dot m proves a great netbook. The screen in particular is fantastic and this machine is certainly worth a look.

The Packard Bell dot m/a, also known in some circles as the Gateway LT3100, does away with the Intel norm in favour of an AMD Athlon L110 CPU. It also plumps for a larger-than-usual 11.6-inch screen and a slightly wider chassis, pushing it dangerously near laptop territory. The Packard Bell dot m/a is a good netbook, particularly for anyone seeking a larger screen than normal. It's slightly bigger than many of its rivals and its battery life is merely average, but it has an excellent keyboard and would make for a great second computer.

Although the dot S2 is frighteningly similar to the Acer 532h, there are a few differences. The touchpad is an improvement and the extra bundled software a welcome bonus, while it also manages to out perform the Acer-branded version in terms of battery life. It’s not enough to get a better score, though. I also can’t help feeling that if Acer is to continue producing netbooks under the Packard Bell brand, it would do well to differentiate them from the Aspire One series a little more.

Packard Bell: Packard Bell é uma subsidiária da Acer com sede em Taiwan. É um nome usado por duas diferentes empresas de eletrônicos. A primeira é um fabricante de rádios Americana fundada em 1926, que mais tarde se tornou contratada da defesa nacional e fabricante de outros produtos eletrônicos como televisores. A Teledyne adquiriu o negócio em 1978. Em 1986, investidores compraram o nome para uma recém formada empresa de computadores pessoais. Originalmente a companhia produzia computadores de baixo custo nos EUA, depois os computadores passaram a ser produzidos para o mercado europeu. A NEC tomou o controle da empresa no final dos anos 90. A Acer a adquiriu em 2008. Apesar dos nomes similares, não há nem nunca houve nenhuma conexão corporative entre a original e a depois surgida Packard Bell e Hewlett Packard, ou Bell System. Packard Bell é um fabricante internacional de portáteis, mas com uma participação razoável no mercado de ações e algumas análises. Até agora (2009), a companhia focou em portáteis especialmente resistentes.

Muitos jogos são dificilmente executados com estes adaptadores gráficos ou se executam muito lentamente.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 950: Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950 é um chip de vídeo integrado (incorporado) na Mobile Intel 945GM chipset.  É uma versão clocked mais rápida da GMA 900.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 3150: Placa de vídeo integrada (memória compartilhada) nos CPUs Atom N4xx da Intel. Minimamente mais veloz que uma antiga GMA 950 e, portanto, não é adequada para jogos 3D ou vídeos HD (somente aceleração MPEG2).

Estes processadores gráficos podem mostrar fluidamente só jogos antigos. Jogos atuais só podem ser apresentados com detalhes substancialmente reduzidos.

Intel Graphics Media Accelerator (GMA) 4500MHD: GPU integrado (memória compartilhada) no chipset GM45 (Montevina). Graças a dois shaders a mais e uma freqüência de núcleo mais alta, é muito mais rápido que o antigo GMA X3100. Mesmo assim, não é recomendável para jogadores (jogos DirectX 10 não são fluidos e podem ser jogados somente com configurações muito baixas). O processador de vídeo integrado é capaz de ajudar a decodificar vídeos HD (AVC/VC-2/MPEG2), como para uma reprodução fluida de Blu-Ray com CPUs lentos.

Intel Atom: A série Atom da Intel é um microprocessador de 64 Bits para portáteis pequenos e baratos, MIDs, ou UMPCs. A especialidade de sua nova arquitetura é a execução “in order” (ao inves de a usual mais rápida execução “out of order”). Assim, o trabalho do transistor é bem mais baixo na série Atom, e é mais barato para produzir.

N270: CPU de Netbook lento e barato, de um só núcleo energeticamente eficiente. Por causa da execução em-ordem, o desempenho por MHz é pior que o dos processadores Core Solo ou Celeron M.

N450: O CPU Intel Atom para Netbooks com controlador integrado de memória e GPU GMA 3150. O desempenho do sistema deve ser somente minimamente mais veloz que a combinação anterior Atom N280 / GMA 950.

Intel Core 2 Duo: Este é o sucessor do Core Duo e o Core Solo com um pipeline mais longo e com 5-20%  a mais de velocidade sem maior consumo de energia. Adicionalmente ao design do Core Duo existe um quarto decodificador, uma unidade SSE ampliada e uma unidade lógica aritmética (ALU) adicional.

Os Core 2 Duo para notebooks são idênticos aos processadores Core 2 Duo para desktops, mas os processadores para notebooks trabalham com tensões mais baixas e um Frontside bus clock mais baixo. O desempenho de notebooks igualmente clocked é 20-25% mais baixo que PCs Desktop  por causa do Frontside bus clock mais baixo e os discos rígidos mais lentos.

Grandes tamanhos de tela permitem maiores resoluções. Portanto, detalhes como letras são maiores. Por outro lado, o consumo de energia é menor com diagonais de tela menores e os aparelhos são menores, mais leves e mais econômicos.
