Embora você possa certamente usá-lo para jogos, não é realmente para isso que o Xe Max foi projetado. Seu desempenho por dólar será mais alto para cargas de trabalho como HandBrake ou Adobe Lightroom do que para jogos puros.

A família Intel Xe de GPUs é a ousada tentativa da empresa de se confrontar com as populares placas gráficas Nvidia. Tornar algo competitivo contra a GeForce RTX 3080 não vai acontecer da noite para o dia, é claro, e por isso a Intel optou por começar do zero, lançando primeiro as soluções integradas Iris Xe antes de eventualmente disponibilizar opções discretas. Os primeiros laptops com Xe integrado foram lançados no final do ano passado, enquanto o Xe Max discreto está agora finalmente disponível nas prateleiras das lojas, embora em quantidades limitadas.

Os dois primeiros laptops com a GPU Xe Max que os usuários podem comprar agora mesmo são o Asus VivoBook Flip 15 TP470 e Dell Inspiron 15 7506 2 em 1 Black Edition. Os problemas com o driver estavam repletos quando inicialmente colocamos nossas mãos no conversível Dell, mas a Intel acabou resolvendo muitas destas preocupações com atualizações do driver (versão 27.20.100.9039 no momento em que escrevemos). O Xe Max não é uma GPU discreta tradicional, no entanto, pois a Intel o projetou especificamente para codificação de vídeo e edição gráfica em vez de proezas de jogos brutos.

Isto significa que o Xe Max não pode jogar jogos de forma alguma? Embora ele certamente possa rodar alguns títulos mais rápido que o GeForce MX350 baseado em nossa experiência com o Dell conversível, outros títulos podem rodar significativamente mais lento. Por exemplo, tanto o DOTA 2 quanto o GTA V correriam quase 50% mais lentos que o GeForce MX350 para serem apenas marginalmente melhores que os Xe 96 EU integrados. O GPU não é otimizado para muitos jogos e os resultados definitivamente mostram.

Pior ainda é o fato de que o Dell Inspiron 15 7506 2 em 1 Black Edition é vendido no varejo por bem mais de US$ 1000. Ao considerar que um laptop padrão com gráficos mais rápidos GeForce GTX 1650 ou GTX 1660 Ti custa aproximadamente o mesmo, o Xe Max precisaria baixar significativamente o preço para ser mais vantajoso.

Há rumores de que a Intel está trabalhando em uma série DG2 de placas gráficas desktop que pode rivalizar melhor com as placas da AMD e Nvidia. Teremos apenas que esperar e ver se os drivers DG2 serão melhor otimizados para jogos ou se teremos uma repetição do Xe Max.
