Maximising its useability does take a little while but, even after a few days with it, I could clearly see the benefits, especially as the design hasn’t resulted in too many compromises. The lack of any hand rest space below the keyboard is a bind if you regularly use your laptop away from a desk but, used on a desk, the layout is really little different from using a regular desktop keyboard. Moreover, the quality of those two displays, especially the trick 2K 240Hz, 4K 120Hz hybrid main screen, makes this machine an easy recommendation. The big issue is that very high price.

I had the pleasure of checking out the original Asus ROG Zephyrus Duo back when it originally launched (in a smaller 15-inch configuration) in 2020. At the time, Asus proudly declared it the world’s first dual-screen gaming laptop - a slightly loaded statement, since the manufacturer’s own Zenbook Pro Duo was already offering solid gaming performance in a twin-screen laptop. Still, for all the novelty the original Zephyrus Duo offered, it didn’t really impress me. The keyboard and trackpad were cramped together beneath the secondary screen, which felt poorly implemented at best. Gaming performance was great, sure, but poor speakers, an underdeveloped design, and noisy-ass fans all contributed to a less-than-stellar overall experience - a far cry from the best laptops. Fast-forward two years, though, and the Zephyrus Duo is back with a vengeance. Well, perhaps not vengeance exactly, but a bigger screen, better audio, and new internal components all mean that the Asus ROG Zephyrus Duo 16 is a big brother to the original laptop that means business.

The comfort under load depends on your work. In Silent mode, the two fans aren’t spinning until the CPU reaches a certain temperature. If you need the full power of the laptop, the Turbo mode is the way to go but the fans will punish your ears with 5000 RPM. In this preset, they are audible even in idle. On the other hand, the keyboard and the touchpad feel just a bit warm even when the CPU or the GPU are max stressed. Of course, the notebook isn’t perfect. We would like to see faster RAM and SSD considering the high price of this machine. Because of the dual-screen setup, the laptop is thick and heavy. The I/O features a lot of ports but it lacks a Thunderbolt 4 / USB4 connector. Last but not least, the battery life is short. Still, the ASUS ROG Zephyrus Duo 16 (GX650, 2023) offers two displays combined with perhaps the latest and greatest mobile tech on the market.

The ASUS ROG Zephyrus Duo is about as close to a hyper gaming laptop as you can get, similar to how a Lamborghini Urus or a Ferrari stacks up against your typical crossover or coupe. It's ridiculously expensive and it comes with a handful of special considerations due to its unique design. But at the same time, it's really powerful and its dual displays allow for setups that traditional clamshells can only dream of. And unlike your typical hypercar, its efficiency is better than expected while it also offers a strong selection of ports and connectivity. Sometimes I think the Zephyrus Duo could have used a better name because it's an even better transformer than some of ASUS' previous devices, like a tablet that converted into a laptop, that bore that designation. If Hasbro wanted to reimagine its iconic G1 bots as modern gadgets, I can't help but think that this laptop would be the perfect design for an updated take on Blaster or Soundwave. There's a childlike joy I get every time I open up the Duo to reveal its two displays, and as an adult I really appreciate the extra screen space you get with its design — not to mention its excellent performance. Unfortunately, its price means that most of the people who might also enjoy it probably can't afford one. But if you can, the ROG Zephyrus Duo is exceedingly cool and there's really nothing else like it available today.

It’s not quite as useful for gaming as it is for productivity, but having a second screen available is handy if you need to reference a guide or video while playing. And while the ROG Zephyrus Duo is primarily a gaming laptop, it’s also a solid choice for general productivity, in which case the dual-screen design is a major advantage. There is a trade-off, however, and that’s the performance-per-dollar Asus can offer. The ROG Zephyrus Duo uses an Intel Core Ultra 9 386H processor with 16 cores. Only four of those are performance cores, and that has consequences for the laptop’s multi-core CPU performance. While it’s hardly slow, the Asus ROG Zephyrus Duo is behind a laptop like the MSI Raider 16 Max HX, which has the 24-core Intel Core Ultra 9 290HX Plus. Fortunately for Asus, the ROG Zephyrus Duo strikes back with several excellent features. It has a large touchpad, a great sound system, two gorgeous OLED displays, and long battery life (so long as the discrete GPU is not engaged). These perks will help some shoppers overlook the Core Ultra 9 386H’s modest scores in multi-threaded benchmarks.

Overall, this is a fun, but bulky machine to carry around, but I keep coming back to the fact that it's a gaming laptop. It's also pretty expensive, but again, it's a gaming laptop. By their very nature, gaming laptops are top-of-the-line machines built to get every frame per second you can out of it. That comes at a cost, especially in this day and age. It's definitely at the top end of the price spectrum, but it's a special machine. The Zephyrus Duo is not for me — I tend to favor much thinner and much lighter laptops because of my job and because of the fact that I'm really not much of a gamer. But if you are, and you like the idea of playing a game on the top screen while you stream on the bottom, or have a map open, or something similar, this is a very tempting device to pick up. But it's going to cost you — both in your wallet, and on your back. So, if you want to explore this device, be very, very sure you want everything it will give you, because you're going to pay a lot to get it.

Asus: A ASUSTeK Computer Inc. é uma importante fabricante taiwanesa de hardware de computador com sede em Taipei, fundada em 1989. Sob a marca Asus, a empresa fabrica uma ampla gama de produtos, incluindo laptops, desktops, placas-mãe, placas gráficas, monitores, smartphones e equipamentos de rede, sistemas completos e componentes de PC para usuários finais.

Sob a marca ROG (Republic of Gamers), a ASUS fabrica laptops para jogos conhecidos pelos gamers por suas especificações poderosas, placas de vídeo dedicadas, telas de alta taxa de atualização e sistemas de resfriamento avançados.

Além dos jogos, uma ampla gama de notebooks é oferecida para diferentes necessidades e orçamentos, desde ultrabooks finos e leves até conversíveis 2 em 1 versáteis e opções econômicas. Em 2023, a Asus tinha uma participação de 7% no mercado global de PCs.
