A Microsoft demanda um preço mais alto pelo Lumia 550 que para o precursor, mas ele também tem mais para oferecer com o suporte para LTE, uma tela de maior resolução e bateria de maior capacidade. No entanto, não deve se ocultar que a contagem de pixels da câmera frontal foi reduzida e algumas aplicações como MixRadio ou HereDrive+ não estão mais instalados. Algumas vantagens do Lumia 535, como uma bateria removível, slot micro-SD e capa traseira trocável, foram adotadas. A tela no Lumia 550 é um pouco menor que a do seu predecessor, e luta com alguns bugs na nova versão Windows 10 Mobile. Além disso, recursos importantes do sistema operacional, como "Continuum" ou acesso via a leitura da íris, não estão disponíveis para o Lumia 550.

No geral, o Lumia 550 é um bom smartphone com um excelente preço, que é suficientemente rápido para o uso rotineiro e que oferece um bom equipamento na forma de uma boa tela, LTE, slot micro-SD e bateria removível pelo baixo preço.

A carcaça deixa uma impressão de boa qualidade, mas é sensível à pressão. A recepção é boa, a qualidade da voz convence, e a câmera principal tira fotos relativamente boas. A tela é brilhante e reproduz bem o conteúdo. O manuseio é bastante fluente e o seu desempenho é suficiente para a maioria das tarefas rotineiras. A duração da bateria é adequada para o uso diário. Um preço de rua de 90 Euros (~$98) para um smartphone não deixa muito espaço para reclamar. Apesar de tudo, uma carcaça um pouco mais rígida e uma melhor câmera para "selfies" teriam combinado bem com o Lumia 550. A Microsoft deveria revisar o consumo de energia e o software, às vezes, instável.
